Economic situation in Ukraine
Our panelists expect the economy to have lost steam from H1 so far in H2, broadly in line with available data. The Ministry of Economy estimates that annual GDP growth fell to 3.9% in January–August (January–June: +4.1% yoy), as an intense drought during the summer plus Russia’s large-scale attacks on the energy grid hit agricultural and industrial activity, respectively. That said, in July–September, growth in both credit and goods exports accelerated from H1. In other news, Ukraine unlocked USD 1.1 billion in aid following a staff-level agreement with the IMF in November. In the same month, U.S. President Biden approved the use of U.S.-made long-range missiles against Russia and pledged to deliver the final USD 6 billion in outstanding military aid by January; the move followed Donald Trump’s election; he is set to withdraw U.S. aid and force a hasty peace deal next year.Ukraine Economic Forecasts
