A central bank, reserve bank, or monetary authority is an institution that manages a nation’s (or in a few cases, groups of nations’) currency, money supply, and interest rates. These institutions are also usually in charge of overseeing the commercial banking sector within their jurisdictions.
One of the primary functions of a monetary authority (central bank) is to control the nation’s money supply through its monetary policy. One of the primary ways that it does this is through management of policy interest rates. The policy interest rate is the rate that the monetary authority sets in order to influence the evolution of the main monetary variables in the economy such as consumer prices, exchange rate or credit expansion, among others.
