Bulgaria: Inflation comes in at highest level since May 1998 in August
Inflation came in at 17.7% in August, which was up from July’s 17.3%. August’s reading represented the highest inflation rate since May 1998. Looking at the details of the release, the change in prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages increased at a weaker rate in August, while prices for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels rose. Meanwhile, transportation price growth moderated.
The trend pointed up, with annual average inflation coming in at 11.7% in August (July: 10.5%). Meanwhile, harmonized inflation ticked up to 15.0% in August, from the previous month’s 14.9%.
Finally, consumer prices increased 1.17% over the previous month in August, picking up from the 1.12% rise seen in July.
