Chile: Economic activity picks up in January
In January, the IMACEC economic activity index grew 1.5% on an annual basis, slightly above December’s 1.1% increase, but markedly below the levels seen before October’s civil unrest.
January’s increase reflected a 1.5% expansion in the non-mining economy, which was up from December’s 0.8% rise thanks to upbeat activity in the services and construction sectors. On the other hand, growth in the mining economy slowed to 2.2% from 3.7% in the previous month.
In month-on-month seasonally-adjusted terms, economic activity rose 1.3% over the previous month in January, decelerating from December’s 3.5% expansion.
