Finland: Current account swings to surplus in January
The current account recorded a EUR 0.2 billion surplus in January, improving from the EUR 0.1 billion deficit recorded in December (January 2022: EUR 0.4 billion deficit). Meanwhile, the 12-month trailing current account deficit improved, coming in at EUR 9.7 billion in January (December: EUR 10.3 billion deficit).
Additionally, the merchandise trade balance improved from the previous month, recording a EUR 0.6 billion surplus in January (December 2023: EUR 0.0 billion). Merchandise exports shot up 14.5% annually in January (December: -5.9% year on year). Meanwhile, merchandise imports were broadly stable, rising just 0.9% over the same month last year in January (December: 0.2% yoy).
