Germany: Merchandise exports drop in January

Merchandise exports rose 6.4% over the previous month in February (January: -3.0% month-on-month). Meanwhile, merchandise imports increased 4.5% in monthly terms in February (January: -4.0% mom).

As a result, the merchandise trade balance improved from the previous month, recording a EUR 11.5 billion surplus in February (January: EUR 8.9 billion surplus; February 2021: EUR 18.2 billion surplus). On the other hand, the trend worsened as the 12-month trailing merchandise trade balance recording a EUR 151.5 billion surplus in February, compared to EUR the 158.2 billion surplus recorded in January.
