Kazakhstan: Inflation edges down in May

Consumer prices rose 0.2% over the previous month in May, down from the 0.4% month-on-month increase registered in April. Prices increased in 8 out of the 12 sub-components, came in flat for three and declined for one. Clothing and footwear registered the biggest upturn in prices, while transport was the only category that recorded lower prices. Food and non-alcoholic beverages; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; and education were the components that registered flat prices from the previous month.

Inflation edged down to 6.2% in May from 6.5% in April, remaining close to the mid-point of the Central Bank’s target range of 5.0%–7.0%. Annual average inflation inched down to 7.0% in May from 7.1% in April, which marked the lowest figure in over two years.
