Malaysia: Merchandise exports rebound in April
Merchandise exports increased 1.3% year-on-year in April, following March’s 6.1% decrease. The outturn marked the strongest result since February 2023. Meanwhile, merchandise imports rose 7.4% over the same month last year in April (March: +6.5% yoy).
As a result, the merchandise trade balance deteriorated from the previous month, recording a USD 1.6 billion surplus in April (March 2024: USD 2.7 billion surplus; April 2023: USD 2.9 billion surplus). Lastly, the trend deteriorated, with the 12-month trailing merchandise trade balance recording a USD 38.4 billion surplus in April, compared to the USD 39.6 billion surplus in March.
