Netherlands: PMI decreases in September
The NEVI Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), produced by S&P Global, decreased to 43.6 in September from 45.9 in August. As such, it remained below the neutral 50-threshold that separates deteriorating from improving business conditions compared to the prior month.
The deterioration was driven by output and new orders falling at a quicker pace amid weak demand. The former decreased at the fastest rate since May and the latter since July. In the same vein, job cuts were the most rapid since July 2020. Turning to prices, input prices experienced one of the fastest decreases in survey history. Additionally, firms highlighted that competition forced them to reduce their output prices. Lastly, companies remained optimistic that output would rise over the next 12 months, despite their overall confidence remaining historically subdued.
