New Zealand: Consumer confidence improves again in December
The ANZ-Roy Morgan consumer confidence indicator rose to 93.1 in December from 91.9 in November. Therefore, the index remained entrenched below the 100-threshold that separates optimism from pessimism among consumers.
In December, households’ expectations over their future financial situations improved notably. Moreover, households’ assessments of their current financial situations also improved. Additionally, inflation expectations dropped sizably.
Commenting on the release, Sharon Zollner, chief economist at ANZ, stated:
“The wide gap between the current and forward-looking questions in the survey persists. This is typical during and after periods in which the economy is weak, such as 2009-10.”
