Peru: Merchandise exports growth ebbs in January
Merchandise exports rose 16.2% in annual terms in January, easing from December’s 26.2% increase but nonetheless marking the 17th consecutive month of rising exports. Meanwhile, merchandise imports increased 25.9% in annual terms in January (December: +23.5% yoy), marking the highest result in three months.
As a result, the merchandise trade balance deteriorated from the previous month, recording a USD 1.0 billion surplus in January (December 2021: USD 1.7 billion surplus; January 2021: USD 1.2 billion surplus). Lastly, the trend deteriorated, with the 12-month trailing merchandise trade balance recording a USD 14.6 billion surplus in January, compared to the USD 14.8 billion surplus in December.
