Peru: Merchandise exports rise for tenth consecutive month in June
Merchandise exports rose 68.2% in annual terms in June, slowing considerably from May’s meteoric 144.8% surge which had marked the strongest increase in at least 30 years. June’s reading was still in part influenced by a low base effect, however June 2020’s downturn was much softer than those recorded in April and May 2020. Meanwhile, merchandise imports soared 73.0% on an annual basis in June (May: +79.7% yoy), marking the third consecutive month of over-70% growth.
As a result, the merchandise trade balance improved from the previous month, recording a USD 1.0 billion surplus in June (May 2021: USD 0.9 billion surplus; June 2020: USD 0.6 billion deficit). Lastly, the trend pointed up, with the 12-month trailing merchandise trade balance recording a USD 12.3 billion surplus in June, compared to the USD 12.0 billion surplus in May.
