Taiwan: Inflation slows in January

Consumer prices decreased 0.35% from the previous month in January, following a 0.15% month-on-month fall registered in December. January’s reading was weighed on by a fall in the prices of vegetables, fruits and garments. Conversely, the prices of fuels and lubricants, eggs, and tobacco and betel nuts all increased during the month.

Meanwhile, inflation moderated to 0.9% in January, from 1.2% in December. Annual average inflation edged down to 0.5% from 0.6% a month earlier.

Core consumer prices, which exclude prices for energy and fresh food, decreased 0.08% in January on a month-on-month basis, contrasting the 0.14% increase recorded in the previous month. Core inflation fell to 0.8% from 1.6% in December.
