Annual GDP growth accelerated further in the second quarter from the first. Recently released national accounts data by the Central Bank of the West African States showed that the economy expanded 6.5% annually in Q2 (Q1: +6.3% yoy), the second-strongest pace out of the eight members of the West African Economic and Monetary Union. The industrial sector likely contributed to the improvement as output increased at a stronger pace relative to Q1. Turning to Q3, the economy likely remained buoyant. Industrial production growth accelerated from Q2 in July, coming in at 7.1% year on year (Q2: +5.0% yoy). Moreover, inflation in July–August was steady at Q2’s level, suggesting resilient private spending. In other news, the country should have better cocoa harvests this season, which began in recent days; moreover, higher prices paid to farmers should curb bean smuggling, boding well for exports ahead.
