A second national accounts release revealed that the economy expanded 1.1% sequentially in Q2, above both the initial 0.6% estimate and Q1’s 0.8% decline. A favorable base effect, a flourishing pharmaceutical industry, healthier stock building and rebounding exports underpinned the recovery, outweighing weaker readings on the domestic front. Our panelists expect sequential GDP growth to have slowed in Q3, as still-tight borrowing conditions likely continued to dent credit, investment and the finances of households with variable-rate mortgages. That said, available data suggests upside risks to this forecast. Retail sales rose from Q2 levels in July–August amid lower inflation and less downbeat consumer sentiment, suggesting healthier private spending in the quarter. Moreover, manufacturing output and goods exports strengthened in the same two-month period from Q2.
