Economic growth waned to 0.7% in Q2, hampered by weaker growth in fixed investment and private consumption. Our panelists forecast GDP growth to have accelerated in Q3, and the data at-hand supports this view: Faster real wage growth in July and a tighter labor market in July–August should have boosted private spending; accordingly, retail sales rebounded from Q2’s decline in July–August. Moreover, in the same two-month period, both industrial production and goods exports bounced back from the previous quarter’s dip. However, both consumer confidence and economic sentiment worsened in Q3, calling for caution. In other news, in mid-October, Parliament approved a EUR 1.3 billion public sector pay reform that will come into effect on 1 January 2025; the bill envisages salary increases and regular adjustments for inflation, boding well for private consumption.
