The economy likely remained in a challenging spot in Q3, after GDP contracted annually for a second quarter in a row in Q2. On the domestic front, interest rates remained elevated, and inflation averaged more than double the Central Bank’s 2.5% target despite cooling from Q2. This likely caused the deterioration in consumer sentiment seen in the quarter from Q2, as well as restraining credit, investment and private consumption. More positively, the unemployment rate fell in July–August from Q2, which should have lent some support to household budgets. Turning to the external front, merchandise exports growth slowed from Q2 in Q3. Meanwhile, hotel stays contracted less in July–August than in Q2, although this was largely reflective of a more favorable base of comparison. In politics, the three-party coalition collapsed in October, and snap parliamentary elections will take place on 30 November.
