Annual GDP growth cooled to 4.6% in Q2 (Q1: +5.0% yoy) as slower momentum in the agricultural and services sectors outweighed improvements in manufacturing plus mining and quarrying. In Q3, our panel expects the economy to have picked up; that said, mass protests against a major tax bill continued, disrupting economic activity and forcing the legislation to be scrapped. This U-turn on the bill meant the IMF was unable to greenlight the USD 600 million third tranche of Kenya’s bailout in its mid-September visit. Later in the month, protests resumed after the government decided to award the conglomerate of Indian mogul Adani a 30-year concession to run Kenya’s largest airport. Moreover, Parliament impeached Deputy President Gachagua on 8 October on charges of graft and stirring ethnic hatred, further straining political stability.
