The economy is forecast to have decelerated on an annual basis in Q3. Private spending likely softened from Q2: Despite low inflation in July–August, retail sales growth eased from April–June in July. Additionally, survey data points to downbeat conditions in the key manufacturing sector in August–September. Tight monetary conditions likely also capped domestic demand through September. Nevertheless, other available data leaves room for optimism: Industrial activity expanded faster in July than in Q2, and goods exports growth strengthened notably in July–August from the prior quarter. In other news, Malaysia’s king is reportedly planning to seek funding from China for a multi-billion dollar rail project with Singapore, while global tech giant Oracle recently unveiled plans to invest USD 6.2 billion in a cloud hub in Malaysia—one of the country’s largest FDI projects in recent years.
