Year-on-year economic growth eased to 4.4% in Q2 from 4.9% in Q1. The deceleration was driven by smaller expansions in private spending and fixed investment. On the flip side, public spending rebounded and exports fell at a softer rate. Shifting to the third quarter, economic activity grew at a softer pace in July relative to Q2 due to weaker momentum in the agricultural, mining and domestic trade sectors. That said, external sector data is more promising. In July, merchandise exports growth broadly matched Q2’s pace, as did remittances inflows growth over July–August. In other news, the government exiled 135 political prisoners to Guatemala in September. The decision to free the prisoners came after talks with the U.S., which stated that it had not given any concessions to Nicaragua for the release. Relations between the two countries are likely to remain strained going forward.
