Recently released data confirmed that Q2’s annual growth acceleration was broad-based: There were sharper rises in exports, fixed investment, and public plus private spending compared to Q1. In Q3, our forecasts point to softer GDP growth, and available data bears out this prediction. Economic activity rose by 5.2% in July–August, cooling from Q2’s 6.1% increase, with the moderation largely due to the agricultural and services sectors, the latter likely affected by melting tourist arrivals growth. More positively, the construction and manufacturing sectors aided momentum, and surging remittances growth in July–August prevented a deeper slowdown in private spending. In other news, President Luis Abinader tabled the first major labor reform proposal in 32 years in September. The bill will likely pass, thus easing strict regulations and boding well for the business environment and growth.
