Annual economic growth ticked up to 9.8% in Q2 from 9.7% in Q1. A sharp acceleration in private consumption and a slight pickup in exports outweighed slowdowns in public spending and fixed investment. Turning to Q3, available data paints a mixed picture. On the one hand, industrial production growth more than halved in July–August from Q2, dented by a contraction in manufacturing output. Moreover, inflation averaged above Q2’s rate in the quarter, likely capping household spending. On the other hand, merchandise exports growth was more than eight times faster in July–August than in Q2. In other news, in early October, Fitch Ratings affirmed the country’s ‘B+’ rating with a stable outlook. The agency lauded the country’s strong growth prospects but highlighted downside risks associated with its high levels of public and external debt.
