In the second quarter, the economy achieved its strongest quarterly growth in two years. This was partially the result of major sporting events. However, excluding these events, the economy still grew by 0.5%, more than twice the Eurozone average. Net trade significantly boosted GDP, whereas domestic demand weighed on the economy’s overall performance. Economic growth in the third quarter is anticipated to have slowed, though still to have outpaced the Eurozone average amid Switzerland’s comparatively low inflation, interest rates and unemployment rate. Available data is generally upbeat: in July–August, retail sales were much higher than in Q2, while the PMI survey showed that manufacturing firms’ operating conditions deteriorated at a much softer rate in Q3 than in Q2.
